sound research expeditions
been doing a lot of work on the new miaoux miaoux album recently, and i’ve got two tracks that are nearly finished and ready to be sent off for demos. it’s been a fascinating few days figuring out exactly what sounds good and how to get the best out of my mixes and equipment. here are some things that i’ve learnt:
1. mixing at low levels is essential. it saves your ears and your mixes turn out far better. i did crank it a few times to check the impact though.
2. for some reason recording low end stuff into logic from my outboard (mpc1000, waldorf blofeld) robs it of some of its punch and warmth. logic is brilliant for high frequency stuff, for its effects, and for tracking stuff like guitars. so i’m going to be running the two simultaneously, synced via midi timecode, and get the best of both worlds, mixed through my new mackie cr1402, which sounds great as well.
3. waves maxxbass is magical, as is my recently acquired tl audio ivory compressor. you can’t beat good old analogue compression, and the tl sounds great. punch in the 90hz high pass filter and the ‘fat eq’ button, track everything into pro tools then maxxbass it up. this gives you really sweet low end with none of the sub bass distortion or overcompression you might get otherwise, especially if you’re mixing on small monitors with no sub.
anyway that’s all for now. i’ll no doubt be doing some more technical posts in the coming few weeks as the album progresses. can’t wait!
miaoux miaoux new years eve show
i’m playing pin ups hogmanay show at the flying duck in glasgow on friday 31st, alongside the totally brilliant over the wall. should be a great night, come down!
two sessions tonight
engineering two sessions live on radio tonight. tune in to radio scotland from 8pm tonight to hear the wonderful privates hammond orchestra, then radio 1 in scotland from midnight with casino brag. as i couldn’t find any good pictures of the bands themselves, have a couple of their records. then go out and buy them.
miaoux miaoux @ electric circus
fresh (or rather, not so fresh) from tearing up rockness and goNorth a couple of weeks ago, i played a set in edinburgh last night, at the neon metropolis that is electric circus. set went really well and anni snapped a few photos, which i’ve included here.
let the blogging recommence!
miaoux miaoux - versus @ voodoo rooms, edinburgh
i’ll be playing an unusual show at the voodoo rooms in edinburgh this thursday - called versus, it involves playing for most of the night with two other bands (the japanese war effort and dupec, both of whom are great), collaborating and improvising and playing new material. it’s a really interesting and unique idea and i can’t wait to play - we’ve already rehearsed some stuff and it’s sounding amazing. come down if you can!
27th may, 7pm @ voodoo rooms, edinburgh.
composition: tales from the mall
acclaimed scottish writer ewan morrison has been making a series of short films about the vagaries of consumerism and the shopping experience. i’ve provided the music for this one, all about happiness. watch and be happy!
lecker lecker - banana revenge fails again
a new lecker lecker track done last night, about an attempted banana-related attack that goes wrong. it’s dark and minimal and bass heavy. play it on large speakers, it’ll shake your insides.
ds10 -> mini kp -> logic -> pro tools

miaoux miaoux at words per minute
played a fun, short set at new mixed media night “words per minute” on sunday afternoon at creation studios, rounding off the event with an unintentional remix of rainbow bubbles, dream on and hrvatski. seemed to go down well, although i stupidly forgot to bring any records so made no money. booo. was also doing the sound / vision for the event, so had to do my own FOH balance, which was a mistake but allegedly sounded alright.
anyway anneliese and kirstin hosted and performed with aplomb, and the other acts were great - colin begg performed twisted radioactice poetry, ewan morrison entertained with animations and tales from the mall, lisa foad read a story via video from canada, and martin o’connor spat hilarious modern life prose. can’t wait for the next one, june 6th @ creation studios. yeah!
tom excell - soul lemon (dataslut remix)
aedan from love and cake digital turned me on to the brilliant tom excell, and asked me to have a go at remixing one of his tracks. this is the result, dark and shabby and unpleasant, as dataslut often is.
the remix was done entirely on the monome 40h, running polygome, midi press and mlr. live arrangement. logic and audiomulch provided the fx. loudified in pro tools using the massey limiter. boom.
