thomas truax at mono
went to see thomas truax perform the songs of david lynch last night, as part of the glasgow film festival. not knowing what to expect at all, i was wonderfully surprised to discover a confident but completely insane performer, playing songs and sounds on homemade instruments - a gramaphone horn, the spindles of a bicycle wheel, a suitcase, and what we were assured was “air conditioning duct”.
although i didn’t really understand the connection to lynch until afterwards, truax’s aesthetic fit in perfectly with the off kilter, slightly threatening world that lynch creates, and there were cheers when a cover of “blue velvet” throbbed up from the depths. a wonderfully entertaining night. i should go to more gigs by people i’ve never heard of.
